A screenmate is a small character that lives on top of your desktop: an animated figure strolls across the screen, sits on a window edge, reacts to the cursor. The genre is familiar from the "desktop sheep" and cats of the 2000s — a cute presence, but purely decorative: you could poke the screenmate with the mouse, and that was where the interaction ended.
The idea of a presence on the screen stayed appealing, but its insides got old. The modern take keeps the same figure over your windows and adds what old screenmates lacked — the ability to understand and answer.
There is one difference, and it is fundamental: an AI agent runs inside the body. An old screenmate played pre-drawn animations on a timer; the new one shows a reply bubble and acts out an emotion whenever the agent says something. It breathes, falls asleep and wakes up, and reacts to the flow of a conversation with emotion.
The agent brain is a swappable LLM: it answers in chat, in Telegram and in the website widget, and the overlay is just one more of its surfaces — on your screen. So the pet on your desktop shows the replies of the very agent you set up: its personality, its rules and, if you want, its knowledge base.
In mobile webviews (the VK and Telegram mini apps) the body is locked inside the rectangle of the page — that is no longer a screenmate, just a sprite in a box. On the desktop there is no frame: the agent is present across the whole screen, on top of any app, and can move to any corner. That presence is exactly what the screenmate genre was invented for.

No. Clicks pass through the transparent areas: the mouse is captured only on the body itself and the reply bubble, everything else reaches the window beneath the overlay. You can drag the body into any corner of the screen.
